The Inevitability of TV

While reading van de Port’s article, I was struck by the attempt at TV mimicry and its pervasiveness in society. Van de Port poses the question “is it possible that these videos seek to inscribe candomble rituals in everyday realities by using televisual styles and formats?” It seems almost inevitable that, despite the attempts of candomble priests and taboos, modern forms of media would insert themselves into every corner of the world. As someone who watches far too much TV and has dealt with struggles with the invasive nature of media, the fabrication of reality through the medium of television is an easy trap to fall into. The first thing I thought after reading this was that by using TV to inscribe candomble rituals into the everyday, the everyday will succumb to televisual styles as well. Mimicking TV is a rabbit hole; it doesn’t stop with one activity. It would be interesting to see how this insertion of modern media in the candomble ritual has affected other aspects of practitioners’ lives.
