Secrecy to attract attention

One thing that I've seen through personal experience and observing the behavior of those around me is that people most often want what they cannot have. The mystery, the inability to attain whatever it is we're looking for, is what provides the impetus for the desire that keeps us moving in a given direction. While perhaps it wasn't their original intention, it's quite possible that the canomble have recognized this.
Naturally, the original intention was the preservation of the integrity of the rituals, so that outsiders wouldn't attempt to judge or analyze the practices that they didn't understand. However, when they found that their strict secrecy would attract even further attention from media and tourists (not to mention bringing in more money), I'd be willing to wager there was little complaint from the head members of the cult.
