The Battle between religion and nationality

If you're religion and nationality are separate entities, as is most often the case, it's obvious that a good balance between the two would allow you to immerse yourself spiritually while also assimilating to the nation you live in. What really is this "perfect balance"? Is it better to be exactly 50/50 in thoughts and beliefs? Do some environments call for a greater percentage of a certain entity? For example, is it better to be more in line with the nations thoughts and ideas when in a work place, where you are interacting with people who share the same nationality and not necessarily the same religion?
