My interest in Becoming Sinners was sparked within the first sentence and idea: "the Urapmin have not been Christian for long". My questions that came along with this were, how does a whole group of people become religious? It may come about by just sort of following the fad religion that your leaders or family members have adopted. How do these people adopt a religion, and how does the long chain even begin?
It's true that there are missionaries that can largely influence what religion is practiced in a region over a large span of time but also, how difficult is it to make a whole group of people adopt a religion? Of course we believe that spreading our own religion is "worth it" but is it just a giant game of cat and mouse to see who can make people convert to their religion first and then have that religion sustained in the area over time?
