Different Arguments, All In Favor of Veiling

I found Mahmoud's discussion about the various reasons that exist in support of veiling to be very interesting. She discusses three differing reasons for supporting the practice. One justification for support is that veiling expresses national and cultural heritage, a second is that veiling is an important part of the process through which the pious individual is created, and the third is that veiling helps enforce a way of acting and being. The second reasoning is the one that is invoked by the mosque movement. Mahmoud discusses that the movement is a response to secularization, but interestingly not in opposition to the secular. Rather the mosque movement wants religious understanding and reasoning to operate within the current institutional structures of society. This is a very intriguing alternative to jihadism and revolutionary movements. Perhaps the mosque movement is an example of a middle ground, one that could result in less animosity.
