Absolutism in Fundamentalism

In Harding's article it became clear to me that Fundamentalist Christianity conceives of two positions in this world, the saved and the lost; an individual has either witnessed the gospel or they have not. I found Cantrell's ability to place Harding within his own narrative to be quite astonishing, and potentially powerful. Despite her role as an ethnographer, Harding was unable to remain outside of what she was studying. She was listening to Cantrell and in Fundamentalism, you listen from a position of lostness and speak from a position of salvation. The very act of conducting ethnography and needing to listen placed Harding in a position of needing to be saved and placed her on a path to conversion, irregardless of her motives.
