In the reading this week, we are offered an explanation for how the Christian Fundamentalist movement became so powerful in the US and why it attracts members. Harding explains that Falwell placed utilized a discourse grounded in the bible and based the movement on the language in the bible. He fashioned the Fundamentalist movement using a biblical narrative and convinced people that his was the ultimate way.
I found this account very interesting, especially if we look to compare it with what we have focused on the past few weeks, ISIS and Islamic Fundamentalists. We discussed reasons, varying from a need for life purpose to powerful propaganda, for people to join ISIS. Perhaps we could also look at ISIS's doctrinal argument to see how they might be using a biblical narrative similar to Falwell.
